Archival Jamaica

In September of 2022 started downloading images from archives and adding basic metadata. That data will be added here over time, but sources include the National Library of Jamaica, the Caribbean Photo Archive, the Library of Congress, and LIFE.

Westmoreland Parish

My dad’s grandmother grew up and raised her children in Mount Airy, Jamaica. East of the town of Negril, now a major tourist destination. Near Mount Airy was a plantation named Nonpareil estate. I don’t know much about Nonpareil but it exists on maps and records, and my 3rd great-grandfather was supposedly a stipendiary magistrate, or plantation overseer.
