Bloodline:
Soon Come Back
by Nande Walters
Soon Come Back is a poetic documentary about migration’s effect on my family’s relationships to “home” in Jamaica and the US, and my feelings of alienation being a child of the diaspora.
This project began with Bloodline (2019) where I interviewed my mom about our family tree. Since then, I’ve delved into genealogy research, the history of Jamaica from slavery to colonization, and have collected hundreds of records, archival photographs, and home videos. Through creating films and artist books, Bloodline a world of stories about familial ties, histories passed, and blurred memories.
My thesis film Soon Come Back is structured around poetry written during and around my most recent trip to Jamaica and reflections on all my visits since 2000. It’s about me learning about my grandmother and visiting where she grew up in the mountains above Negril. As well as the oceanic distance between us and evolving technologies used to bring us together. The film explores memory, or lack thereof, the meaning of home, and connecting to those who came before me and planted me where I am as a filmmaker.

Director’s Statement
I’m Nande Walters, a filmmaker, artist, and aspiring archivist working on my senior thesis film for Pratt Institute. As a child to parents from the Caribbean, my life mirrors those of my childhood friends in South Florida and the friends I’ve made since moving to New York. My thesis focuses on the Caribbean diaspora while representing universal experiences of migration. I use this film to question what home means to me, what grief means to me, and what legacy I can leave behind as an artist and an archivist.
Through a year of critically thinking about what I want this film to be about, I’ve grieved in countless ways while learning to accept that I can’t make a film about everything because I’ll never know everything. My process has been about uncovering what’s meaningful to me, and since being in Jamaica, I’ve felt a certainty in being uncertain. I feel gratitude for not being alone in my artistic process and creating an archive for my family.
My feelings are best described through writings during my trip, especially those about my grandmother, inherited anxiety, loneliness, and distance. My relationship with her is a result of the diasporic displacement I’ve been grappling with since entering adulthood. The symbol of lines, physical and metaphorical, has guided me since starting this project in 2019. Creating a comprehensive history of my family is a project I could spend my whole life working on. But Soon Come Back focuses on my present experience and my existential relationships between Florida and Jamaica.
Kickstarter is Fully Funded!!
March 8th-April 6th, 2023!
As my thesis film for Pratt Film/Video and a project about the lives of myself and my family, working on this for the past 3 years and continuing into the future wouldn’t be possible without the support and affirmations from friends and family.
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing platform, meaning I won't receive any money unless I reach my goal of $2000. That's where I need your help!
Funds will go towards travel, production costs, genealogy research, and archival preservation of family materials. Any extra funds will go towards crowdfunding rewards and film festival submission costs.
